Hello and welcome to Commander Bites!

Today we are going to be talking about Uugguu, the Omniplasm!

Uugguu is a three mana 2/2 with whenever another nontoken Ooze you control dies, create two tokens that are copies of that creature, except they’re 2/2 and they aren’t legendary.

Game Plan

Uugguu leans very much into what being an Ooze typal Commander wants in that a lot of Oozes happen to have enters abilities, dies abilities, and ways to make multiple copies of themselves in some form or fashion.

This makes this deck perfect for not only some go wide utility decks, but also works really well for some sacrifice synergies as well. What’s more, there are a couple of legendary Ooze’s that we can use to our advantage.

Support

There are some solid Oozes that we can use for a variety of toolbox purposes.

For example, when Gelatinous Cube enters we exile target creature an opponent controls until the Cube leaves the battlefield and we can pay X and a black to put target creature card with mana value X exiled with the the Gelatinous Cube to it’s owner’s graveyard.

Acidic Slime is also a great toolbox Ooze we can use because when it enters we can destroy target artifact, enchantment, or land, while something like Uchuulon has power and toughness equal to the number of Crabs, Oozes, and/or Horrors we control and can exile a creature from an opponent’s graveyard and if we do we create a token copy of Uchuulon.

Green Slime is also an interesting card to consider because it has flash, Foretell for one green, and when it enters we can counter target activated or triggered ability of an artifact or an enchantment and if a permanent’s ability was countered this was we can destroy that permanent.

Now to help get these Oozes abilities to activate or to get them out onto the battlefield, we can use Prime Speaker Vannifar, which can sacrifice another creature in order to tutor for another creature card with mana value equal to 1 plus the mana value of the sacrificed creature onto the battlefield at sorcery speed.

What’s great about Vannifar is that they are an Ooze as well, meaning that if they do die then we get to have two nonlegendary copies of them on the battlefield that we can use over and over again.

To make even more use of our Oozes we also have access to Biowaste Blob, which gives Oozes we control +1/+1 and at the beginning of our upkeep if we control our Commander then we get to create a token copy of the Biowaste Blob, which can become exponentially big really quickly.

Biogenic Ooze is also a great card for us to use because it enters with a 2/2 Ooze creature token, can make another one of those tokens for four mana, and at the beginning of our end step we can put a +1/+1 counter on each Ooze we control.

With plenty of Oozes at our disposal, we can actually use the disposal of those Oozes for sacrifice synergies. Victimize has us sacrifice one creature in order to bring back two creature cards from our graveyard back to the battlefield tapped, meaning we can sacrifice an Ooze to get two Oozes from the graveyard and two more copies of the sacrificed Ooze back onto the battlefield.

Since we are also sacrificing our creatures, we can make use of cards like Gardenize and Black Market, both of which gain charge counters when creatures die with Gardenize being our own and Black Market being any creatures, and then at the beginning of our first main phase we make a number of green or black mana for each charge counter on them.

This can be very useful for some of the big mana spells like Bloodline Bidding to reanimate all creature cards of a chosen type back to the battlefield from our graveyard, Doubling Season for even more tokens, or even a Reflections of Littjara to copy spells of a chosen creature type.

Setbacks

While Oozes offer a good number of toolbox options that have the solid makings of a midrange deck, we may still struggle a bit.

As has become habit of me, graveyard interaction can be especially bad for the deck, our Commander is key to the primary strategy, and we need to be mindful of our interaction suite.

One interesting thing to keep in mind, is the while Uugguu is in play and our nontoken Ooze creatures get destroyed, we still get the token copies of them. However, since our strategy also happens to rely on creature tokens, specific hate against tokens can also not be ideal for us.

What’s more, while there are a good number of Oozes to choose from, there still aren’t a lot of Oozes when compared to a lot of other creature types, so that can limit the viable number of Oozes that we want to play with.

It also doesn’t help that Oozes are not an often printed creature type, with there being only 49 different Oozes to choose from within our colors, and since we get maybe a handful of Oozes a year, odds are our deck will not be upgrading the Oozes they have continuously.

Not every Ooze is an ideal pick for the deck and while there are plenty of solid utility Oozes, a lot of the decks that use Uugguu as the Commander may end up looking pretty similar to one another in terms of which Oozes ended up being used.

Bracket Rating: High 2, Low 3

There are plenty of Oozes to make the deck pretty viable, and for the most part Uugguu as an Ooze typal Commander is a pretty solid choice that helps fuel the Ooze playstyle.

The reason why I don’t rate the deck higher is that the strategy is pretty narrow and predictable, which means that your opponents can keep your Commander off the board or play exile based removal to blank the token making abilities of Uugguu.

It’s helpful to us that Uugguu is also blue, which means we have access to some more interaction than some other typal decks, so Uugguu can be a solid Commander that can hang decently well.

Thank you for reading, see you all tomorrow!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
