Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be talking about Captain Sisay!

Sisay is a four mana 2/2 with a tap ability to search your library for a legendary card, reveal it, and put it into your hand and you shuffle your library afterwards.

A simple and straightforward tutor effect is nice to see, especially since Sisay just gets more legendary cards to play with with each new set, and we can customize the deck in a wide variety of ways.

The way I’m going for today is a more general legendary matters toolbox type of deck, showcasing the archetype in general, but there really is a wide breadth of ways to take the deck.

The first thing to look at are legendary cards that provide a utility like ramping or providing some sort of protection.

Yasharn, Implacable Earth does both of these things because when it enters you search your library for a basic Plains and basic Forest and put them in your hand while also preventing players from paying life or sacrificing permanents to cast spells or activate abilities.

If you want to lean a bit into the control aspect of legendary creatures then there is also Kutzil, Malamut Exemplar which prevents our opponents from casting spells on our turn and whenever a creature we control with power greater than its base power deals combat damage we draw a card, and there are plenty of anthem effects like Day of Destiny or Flowering of the White Tree that work best for legendary creatures.

In terms of protecting your things you can use Sigarda, Font of Blessings to give your other permanents hexproof and the ability to cast Angels and Humans from the top of your library or there is also Shalai, Voice of Plenty which gives you, Planeswalkers, and other creatures you control hexproof and can give other creatures you control +1/+1 counters.

Loran of the Third Path can destroy an artifact or enchantment an opponent controls while also helping you and an opponent draw a card, Thalia, Heretic Cathar to have your opponents creatures and nonbasic lands enter tapped, Gandalf the White to give legendary spells and artifacts flash and a Panharmonicon effect for legendary permanent’s and artifacts entering or leaving the battlefield, and Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist to limit the number of blocking or attacking creatures.

The next thing we should look at are cards that synergize with legendary cards, even though they may not be legendary themselves.

While legendary cards can do a lot of things, they can’t do everything, so something like Crystal Dragon is normally a overcosted Dragon, but the Adventure of Rob the Hoard can be extremely useful in bringing an artifact, enchantment, or legendary card from the graveyard back to our hand.

Another interesting card to consider that cares about legendary creatures is The Ring Goes South, which has the Ring Tempts You and allows you to reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a number of lands equal to the number of legendary creatures you control and puts them onto the battlefield tapped.

Board the Weatherlight can look at the top five cards of our library and put a historic card into our hand (while also being very flavorful for Sisay), Banish to Another Universe is an Oblivion Ring that has affinity for historic permanents, Animist’s Might is a bite spell that is cheaper if it targets a legendary creature you control, and Loyal Retainers to bring a legendary creature from the graveyard to the battlefield.

We can still include some other strong legendary cards that benefit us like Urza’s Ruinous Blast, which exiles all nonlegendary nonland permanents and Kamahl’s Druidic Vow to look at the top X cards of our library and put lands and/or legendary permanent cards with mana value X or less onto the battlefield while putting the rest in the graveyard.

Heroes’ Podium is an excellent way to boost your legendary creatures +1/+1 for each other legendary creature you control while also letting you dig for more legendary creatures by paying X mana to look at the top X cards.

The best way to close out the game is to get as many legendary cards in play and using their abilities to outvalue your opponents.

Garruk, Caller of Beasts is a great card that helps you dig for more creatures, puts a green creature from your hand onto the battlefield, and can ultimate into letting you search your library for a creature card and put it onto the battlefield whenever you cast a creature spell.

You can put Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant into play with Garruk’s -3 to put all creatures from your hand onto the battlefield and get a wide variety of other effects. You can use Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite to boost your creatures while making your opponents creatures weaker, Kamahl, Heart of Krosa to give your creatures an Overrun effect or Akroma, Angel of Wrath for a keyword soup creature.

If you want to stick with some Planeswalkers, then Ajani, the Greathearted can synergize well with them because he gives your creatures vigilance, gains you a bit of life, and puts a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control and a loyalty counter on each other Planeswalker you control.

Sisay is an incredibly versatile Commander by allowing you to tutor up whatever pieces you need for whatever situation you need. You can fine tune the legendary cards you have in your deck dependent on your local meta, or even running a generic toolbox can serve you well. She will be the major lightning rod for removal once people figure out what your doing, and there are only so many ways to protect her in that case, so bear that in mind.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
