Hello and welcome back to the Magic Super Cube!

This is the blog in which we take a look a sets that were released for Magic that were Standard legal or would have been Standard legal had the format existed and choose cards from those sets in order to make a gargantuan Cube.

Today we are going to be taking a look at Legions, an interesting piece of Magic’s history because it is the first and so far only set that is creatures only. The way that they worked around this was to give creatures either static abilities to fulfill the functions of enchantments or artifacts or one time abilities that allowed them to function as instant or sorceries from the hand or through the Morph ability.

This is a small set of 145 cards, but an interesting thing to note is that there are only cards of the five colors, which means that each of the five colors is getting six picks for cards, which does help open things up quite a bit and we get a come back from one of my favorite creature types.

White

With there being six cards for me to pick, there was some interesting places that I could take my picks.

With white, there were some interesting choices in cards to pick from and while there was a cycle of cards that I could have used for every color, I didn’t make that one of the prevailing themes for each color pick, though since this is my Cube and I have a bias, there are two cards of a particular creature type in each color.

Along with those two creatures, I decided to pick a legendary creature that while expensive to cast is a splashy game ender, a card that can help two creature typal strategies, a mass blink spell that while symmetrical has its uses, and a card from the earlier mentioned cycle that can be effective in keeping you safe from go wide strategies.

My picks for white are Akroma, Angel of Wrath, Celestial Gatekeeper, Essence Sliver, Planar Guide, Ward Sliver, and Windborn Muse.

Blue

Blue had a lot more of a variety of creatures than I initially expected, and it really goes to show that while blue doesn’t focus on creature, they often have some pretty interesting ones.

Again, I went with two creatures of a particular creature type because that is my own personal bias, but there was also a creature that helped inspire a creature ability that still shows up in sets to this day, especially in sets that happen to have a typal heavy theme as they are really effective in fixing that set’s draft format.

The other creature picks include another member of that cycle I previously mentioned, a creature that can help you take a creature that your opponent controls if you are a bit patient with it, and a creature that also happens to reward you if you are patient, though what it helps is potentially saving your big splashy card from a removal spell or ability.

My picks for blue are Chromeshell Crab, Dreamborn Muse, Mistform Ultimus, Shifting Sliver, Synapse Sliver, and Willbender.

Black

Black was solidly in the middle in terms of how difficult it was to pick cards from, which is saying something especially with there being six spots to choose from.

Other than the two Sliver picks, this is also the first color set where I didn’t choose a card that was part of a cycle, even though I chose two members of the cycle already. While that card does help creatures of a prevalent type in black, instead I chose something that can help potentially swing the game for that creature type if you happen to play a go wide version of that deck.

The other creatures choices included a very niche legendary creature that forces you to play them in a particular way but can win you the game if you manage to play them correctly, a board wipe that can be one sided if you are playing a particular creature type, and a creature that plays into a different creature type and in a more aggressive way.

My picks for black are Crypt Sliver, Gempalm Polluter, Noxious Ghoul, Phage the Untouchable, Toxin Sliver, and Vile Deacon.

Red

Of the five colors, red was actually the hardest to pick colors from, and this was not even close.

This also came from the choices of Sliver picks for red, which were kind of underwhelming for red but I did manage to pick two and this was also a color in which I omitted picking from the particular cycle of cards because of how underwhelming it was compared to its contemporaries.

Instead my picks included a creature that could act as a finisher in a particular creature type deck especially if you go wide with it, a way to get some extra mana to help close out a game and if you happen to be flooded with a particular type of land, a tutor for a particular creature type and one that can be surprising to deal with because of Morph, and another Morph surprise creature but one that brings some friends when it does.

My picks for red are Blade Sliver, Clickslither, Goblin Clearcutter, Hunter Sliver, Imperial Hellkite, and Warbreak Trumpeter.

Green

Green was probably one of the easiest colors to pick from, and that surprised me because there were a lot of potential options to choose from.

Green happened to have some of the more interesting Slivers to choose from, and its member of the previously mentioned and omitted cycle is so strong that it has become a Game Changer in Commander because of how strong it is.

The other cards I chose for green came pretty easily once I had those three picked, with one being a way to get a lot creatures in play after a board wipe, a solid utility creature when it is flipped face up, and a way to get some more value in a particular typal strategy by getting creatures of a different type.

My picks for green are Brood Sliver, Caller of the Claw, Nantuko Vigilante, Quick Sliver, Seedborn Muse, and Wirewood Hivemaster.

In Conclusion

As you would expect from there being only the five colors to pick from, this turned out to be fairly simple to pick cards from and a pretty short blog in comparison to some of the previous entries.

When we come back to the Magic Super Cube, we will be finishing off the Onslaught block by looking at Scourge, which just so happens to have introduced a little known mechanic as Storm, which would never ever be problematic.

As usual, here is the Moxfield link to keep up with all the cards in the Cube!

See you next time!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
