Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be talking about Amy Rose!

Amy is a four mana 3/3 with haste and whenever she attacks you attach up to one target Equipment to her and then up to one other target attacking creature gets +X/+0 until end of turn where X is Amy’s power.

Amy is a pretty straightforward Equipment Commander, all things considered. Get Equipment in play, attack for a free attach, and have another creature you control also deal a ton of damage. What I want to do with the deck will play into that, but there is a goofy side plan.

As with many straightforward Commanders I have made my own self imposed win condition, in getting a few specific Equipment in play in order to achieve total victory, and as a reference to a Magic the Gathering creator that I respect and one who inspired me to start writing Magic blogs in the first place.

The goal of this deck is to get three specific Equipment into play in order to make a super creature that will win us the game.

The three Equipment in question are the Kaldra trio, with the Helm of Kaldra being one of the centerpieces of the deck. Normally it gives a creature first strike, trample, and haste but for one mana and if we control the Sword of Kaldra, which gives +5/+5 and exiles creatures the equipped creature deals damage to, and the Shield of Kaldra, which gives the equipped creature and the other Kaldra Equipment indestructible, we can make a 4/4 Avatar Legend named Kaldra and attach the Equipment to it.

Once we get these three Equipment onto the battlefield, then our goal is to have Kaldra be our secret Commander to help us win the game. In order for us to get the Equipment we need cards like Fighter Class, which when it enters it can search for an Equipment, then make Equip costs two mana cheaper, and forces a creature to block whenever a creature you controls attacks.

Kellan, the Fae-Blooded has the Adventure Birthright Boon which allows us to search our library for an Aura or Equipment while Kellen himself has double strike and gives a +1/+0 boost to our other creatures equal to the number of Aura’s and Equipment attached to him.

As appropriate to one of the Secret Lairs that was made available when Amy Rose was sold, Open the Armory is also a way for us to grab an Aura or Equipment from our library and put it into our hand, or if we want to wait for a bit for a search, we could also use Quest for the Holy Relic, which gains a quest counter whenever we cast a creature spell and we can sacrifice it when it has five quest counters to tutor for an Equipment and out it onto the battlefield attached to a creature we control.

The next thing we need once we have Kaldra in play is to buff Amy, who will then buff Kaldra.

Since we are playing a Equipment heavy deck, something like Machinist’s Arsenal is going to play extremely well since it gives the equipped creature +2/+2 for each artifact we control and has them be an Artificer among their other creature types. With just the Kaldra pieces and the Arsenal, that gives Amy a +8/+8, which would give Kaldra a +11/+0 boost.

Colossus Hammer is also a great Equipment to have since it gives the equipped creature +10/+10, and while the high Equip 8 would be a hinderance, since Amy automatically attaches an Equipment when she attacks, it becomes a massive boon for us to have such a cheap Equipment in play.

If we want to help ourselves ramp, then we can also use The Reaver Cleaver, which gives the equipped creature +1/+1, trample, and whenever the equipped creature deals combat damage to a player or Planeswalker, then we make that many Treasure tokens, which with Amy being a haste creature can mean we can start racking up the Treasures pretty early.

As far as other utility Equipment we can use Loxodon Warhammer gives the equipped creature +3/+0 along with lifelink and trample, Leyline Axe gives +1/+1 with double strike and trample that can come into play for free if it is in your starting hand, and Thran Power Suit gives the equipped creature +1/+1 for each Aura and Equipment attached to it and ward 2.

Among the best Equipment is Aettir and Priwen, which is an Equipment that gives the equipped creature power and toughness X/X where X is our life total, which when attached to Amy can give a massive power boost to Kaldra as a way for us to potentially getting rid of two opponents at once.

The last thing that we need is a way for us to win the game, and there are a couple of options we can take.

Worldslayer is an Equipment that when the equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, we destroy all permanents other than Worldslayer, which would normally destroy everything. However, if we have the Kaldra Equipment in play attached to Amy, then we can do a massive swing, and destroy everything while we have lands like Darksteel Citadel or Rustvale Bridge in play since they are indestructible to be able to still have Kaldra come in as a back up creature.

If we don’t want to go all in on total permanent destruction, then we can also go along with extra combats in the form of Genji Glove, which untaps the equipped and attacking creature so long as it is the first combat phase and makes an additional combat phase.

Full Throttle also plays into the additional combat phase game plan where after the current main phase, there are two additional main phases that untaps all creatures that have attacked this turn at the beginning of each combat, which helps make Kaldra bigger whenever Amy attacks, meaning a much higher rate of us winning with Kaldra damage.

Or if we manage to get Kaldra or Amy so big, but still unable to seal the deal in winning via damage, we can also use Chandra’s Ignition as a way to have a target creature deal damage to each other creature and opponent as a way to burn our opponents out.

Amy is a straightforward Equipment Commander and while we can definitely go the Voltron path, I think that having the Kaldra game plan be our main strategy makes for a much more interesting way to play the game.

Of course the deck needs the Kaldra pieces to stay in play, and while Shield of Kaldra makes them indestructible, it doesn’t make them immune to exile based removal, especially since none of the Kaldra Equipment give some form of hexproof or ward.

Still, we do have the back up plan of winning via Amy and Commander Damage, which is a perfectly fine option, but one that can get repetitive after a while. Amy is a really solid Equipment Commander so we are likely to win games off of her alone, but the Kaldra game plan does provide an extra challenge that I personally enjoy.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
