Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be talking about Jedit Ojanen, Mercenary!

Jedit is a three mana 3/3 who when he or another legendary creature enters the battlefield under your control, you may pay a green mana and if you do you create a 2/2 green Cat Warrior creature token with forestwalk.

Not the most out there take on a legendary creature Commmander, but one that can compound itself over time if we manage to get a steady stream of legendary creatures in play. We can even play around with this a bit with a couple of unique legendary creatures and some tricky spells.

The plan is the make sure we can get legendary creatures in play, find ways to get a ton of the tokens in play, and then have our creatures and out tokens able to provide enough value for us to use effectively.

The first thing that we need to do is to find ways to get a good number of legendary creatures into play.

Zimone, All-Questioning is perfect for this because if a land entered the battlefield under our control this turn and we control a prime number of lands then we create Primo, the Indivisible, a legendary 0/0 green and blue Fractal creature token with that many +1/+1 counters. The idea is that we should get two legendary creatures from just one card, which means that we have the opportunity to get two tokens from Jedit.

We also have access to several versions of Tolsimir who all make a version of Voja as a legendary creature token of a variety of powers and toughness, but the one that would serve us best would be Tolsimir Wolfblood who gives green creatures we control +1/+1, white creatures we control +1/+1 and can tap to make Voja, a legendary 2/2 green and white Wolf creature token as a way to constantly have a legendary creature enter the battlefield.

Bonny Pall, Clearcutter is one that makes Beau, a legendary blue Ox creature token with power and toughness equal to the number of lands we control and has it so that whenever we attack we draw a card and can put a land from our hand or graveyard into play, which can serve as great utility to ramp us even further.

As far as other utility legendary creatures we have Prava of the Steel Legion which gives creature tokens we control +1/+4 on our turn and can make 1/1 Soldier tokens, Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist to help us get our creatures through by making it so only one creature can block us or attack us when she attacks and is tapped respectively, and Serah Farron to discount the first legendary creature spell we control by two and if we control two or more legendary creatures then she transforms to Crystallized Serah which still gives the two mana discount on the first legendary creature spell, but also gives legendary creatures we control +2/+2.

Since we are a legendary creatures deck, we should have more ways that synergize well with legendary creatures and our creature tokens as well.

We Ride at Dawn is perfect for this type of deck since it gives legendary creature spells we cast convoke, which is helpful when we are also working to make a bunch of creature tokens, but also whenever our Commander attacks we make a 1/1 Mercenary token that can tap to boost a creature by +1/+0 at sorcery speed, but we will more than likely use it to help convoke our creatures in.

Raff Capashen, Ship’s Mage is also a good card for us to play since he has flash and lets us cast historic spells as if they had flash, and the same can be said for Alistair, the Brigadier because because whenever we cast a historic spell we make a 1/1 Soldier creature token and whenever he attacks we can pay eight mana to give creatures we control +X/+X where X is the number of historic permanents we control.

Flowering of the White Tree gives legendary creatures we control +2/+1 and ward 1 while giving nonlegendary creatures we control +1/+1, Time of Need to tutor for a legendary creature from our deck, and Heroes’ Podium to give our legendary creatures +1/+1 for each other legendary creature we control and can look at the top X cards of our library and reveal a legendary creature to put it into our hand.

As far as helping our creature tokens, we have access to King Darien XLVIII which gives other creatures we control +1/+1, can put a +1/+1 counter on himself and make a 1/1 creature token for five mana, but most importantly can sacrifice himself to give creature tokens we control hexproof and indestructible.

Since the tokens that Jedit makes have forestwalk, then it also becomes essential that in order to have a massive unblockable force of nature that we include Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth since it makes every land a Forest in addition to its other land types, which also helps us make more tokens if we happen to be a bit shy on green mana.

Now we want to make sure that we can win, which means we need to get a bit creative in how we get our damage in.

While there are plenty of ways for us to give our creatures trample or the classic forms of evasion like flying, Lumbering Satyr is a tricky way for us to give all creatures, not just the tokens that Jedit makes, forestwalk. Now this is a double edged sword and should be used as a way to make sure we win since it gives all creatures forestwalk, including our opponents.

Now we can also clear the battlefield of a majority of creatures by using Urza’s Ruinous Blast to exile all nonland permanents that aren’t legendary, which does destroy all of our tokens unless we have something like a Guardian of Faith which phases out any number of other creatures we control to protect them.

If we happen to have more tokens then legendary creatures we can also go the other way and use Hour of Reckoning to destroy all nontoken creatures and use something like Rootborn Defenses to populate an additional token and then give creatures we control indestructible.

I haven’t even mentioned that since Jedit counts whenever a legendary creature enters we can make a token, which means that flicker and blink strategies are on the table, so something like Eerie Interlude can be a way to potentially get a bunch more Jedit triggers or using a Conjurer’s Closet to get a consistently solid enters ability while also getting a trigger for Jedit.

Jedit is an interesting toolbox value Commander that values getting a bunch of legendary creatures onto the battlefield and gaining value from making tokens that can be hard to interact with and whatever benefits the legendary creature also provides.

Having a legendary creatures matter Commander often leads itself to being more of a toolbox type of game plan, which is helpful for adapting to a bunch of other opponents, but Jedit also provides the benefit of having an additional go wide aspect to help us have a way to win.

As with most creature based strategies, board wipes are going to be the bane of the deck, but since we are in three colors we have access to some forms of protection that happens to include counter spells or ways to give our creatures indestructible or phase/blink/flicker them away to protect them.

We can also struggle against go wide boards or if we can’t get a way to get damage through because they don’t have a Forest that lets our tokens deal the damage we need, and we have limited ways to give our opponents Forests so that can also be a bit of a struggle.

I do enjoy toolbox decks because of how customizable they are, and Jedit does allow for a lot of customization with a way to win attached to it.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
