Hello and welcome back to Magic Project: Omega!
Today we are rounding up some of the Common creatures by talking about some green Common creatures!
As I have done with the others, I made four creatures that would help define the major archetypes of the set with the fifth creature being a general creature that can be used in any strategy.
Green in ABU is pretty straightforward in accelerating into big creatures or making your creatures bigger, but there are some other interesting designs to pull from that can make some solid commons. This was much easier then the other colors surprisingly, which surprised me because there was something I can reference for all the archetypes as well as the general use card.
As with the others, mana costs and creature types are subject to change.
Design Approach
Like I said earlier, green has some ramp to get into bigger spells as well as some decent creatures for the time. The cards I made here are smaller, but they all provide very useful utility for their archetypes, which for green are Aggro, +1/+1 Counters, Graveyard, and Big Mana Spells.
The Common creature for Aggro was pretty easy and something that I can see green doing in modern sets. I think some numbers can be tweaked, but overall I think it will definitely help Aggro as an archetype in terms of just getting a bunch of damage through.
The Common creature for +1/+1 Counters was also pretty interesting. There is a card in ABU that generates +1/+1 counters in an interesting way, and through its flavor text it actually helps make generating counters with this creature much more interesting than just adding counters to itself or other creatures.
The Common creature for Graveyard was a simple enough design to reference that I felt like I needed to add an effect to it to make it a bit more interesting. It’s pretty generic in that aspect, but it does incentivize you getting certain cards from your graveyard. This is the one I think could be tweaked the most.
The Common creature for Big Mana Spells had me in an interesting dilemma. There was a card that I wanted to reference, but that cards is incredibly strong, so in order to nerf the effect I had to put a limit on it. I think it is a strong card, maybe too strong for a Common, but with the limitation I put I think it would be fine.
The general Common is very much a reference to a classic creature from ABU that provides a very generic green effect that I think it is a solid enough to be strong but not overwhelmingly powerful.
Cards
Here are the cards I ended up with!

Of the five colors, this is the strongest I felt in terms of design and references to ABU that only minor modifications may be needed in the future.
Llanowar Mystic (surprisingly a name not taken) was something that I think could help buff your creatures for an aggressive strategy. I originally had it be a tap ability, but decided to make it a mana sink ability as a way to help be an offensive tool, while also having some defensive utility.
Fungusaur Hatchling was probably the card I am most proud of because the original Fungusaur had an ability to get a +1/+1 counter on it when it took damage. I decided to make that ability a bit stronger in that if the Hatchling were to survive the combat it would get stronger, which is in line with the flavor text of Fungusaur.
Sprouting Saproling is the one card I am most mixed on in this batch of cards, since it is Regrowth on a body that has some card draw stapled onto it. It could be very strong, or it could just be fine, but it is the one that I think needs the most testing out of all of them.
Elvish Channeler (another name not taken) is a reference to Channel of course, but instead of giving it the Channel text explicitly, I decided to make it an X cost to make a bunch of mana of any color while paying that much life as well. This could be an overtune on my part, but I think it does make it a much safer card for the set.
Ancient Bear being an anthem on a body was an easy choice for me because Grizzly Bears is such a classic creature that I had to make a reference to it in some capacity. I decided to make it just an anthem and not give it any keywords so that it makes your creatures stronger while not being overtly powerful in its own right.
This is the series of cards that I think are the most solid out of all the colors, only needing some small adjustments I think.
We have finished the series of Common cards for each color, and next time we look at Magic Project: Omega I wanted to delve into looking at the rare land cycle for the set, which means my interpretation of the original Dual Lands, which I have some ideas for, but that will have to wait until next time.
See you all next time!
