Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be talking about Boborygmos and Fblthp!

Borborygmos and Fblthp are a five mana 6/5 with when they enter or attack you draw a card and you may discard any number of land cards, and whenever you discard one or more cards this way, they deal twice that much damage to target creature and for one and a blue you can put them into it’s owner’s library third from the top.

A lands matter Commander that cares about getting lands into our graveyard from our hand to deal damage to a creature, which sounds like a lot of hoops to jump through in order to get a decent outcome, but this presents an interesting way to play.

The plan for the deck is to make a deck with a higher land count and use a sort of land reanimator strategy, getting a ton of lands into the graveyard and then bring them back into play for a myriad of benefits.

The first thing that we need are ways to get cards into our hand, which is an aspect I really don’t touch on and that is card advantage.

Tatyova, Benthic Druid draws us a card and gains us a life whenever we play a land, which will be especially helpful if we go with the higher land count plan as well as ways to play multiple lands in a turn.

Uro, Titan of Nature’s Wrath is a also a way for us to get lands into our hand and onto the battlefield because when it enters or attacks we gain 3 life and draw a card and put a land from our hand into play, which helps us ramp into higher mana plays.

As we continue to get lands into play and have more access to mana, Nylea’s Intervention becomes a way for us to get a ton of lands into our hand by paying X mana to get that mana lands in hand, while also having the modal ability to deal damage to fliers, which may not come up often, but may be something to consider at the very least.

If we just want to churn lands from our hand into the graveyard, then we can use wheels like Change of Fortune, which has us discard our hand and draw a card for each card that we discarded, and we can also consider using Windfall to discard our hand and draw cards equal to the greatest number of cards discarded this way, meaning more lands in hand for Borborygmos and Fblthp to use.

Now that we have ways of getting lands into our hands and into the graveyard, the next thing we need are ways to get lands back onto the battlefield.

Undergrowth Recon is perfect for this because at the beginning of our upkeep we get a land from the graveyard onto the battlefield tapped. We can manage the tapped aspect by playing Spelunking, which can also draw us a card and get a land from our hand into play.

Ramunap Excavator lets us play lands from the graveyard, World Shaper mills us when it attacks and when it dies we can put all land cards from our graveyard onto the battlefield tapped, and Aftermath Analyst can mill us and sacrifice itself to put all land cards from our graveyard onto the battlefield.

Conduit of Worlds is an interesting card, because while it does allow us to play land cards from the graveyard, it also allows us to play a nonland permanent from the graveyard so long as we haven’t cast a spell that turn and prevents us from playing a spell for the rest of the turn. We can use that to get a World Shaper that died back or an Aftermath Analyst back after we sacrificed it, once we get more lands into the graveyard.

Will of the Sultai is a way for us to get additional value from our lands, especially if we have our Commander out since it will let us use both modes of it, one will let us mill cards and then return lands from our graveyard to the battlefield tapped, and the next part will put X +1/+1 counters on a creature and give it trample until the end of the turn, where X is the number of lands we control

This leads perfectly to the Landfall payoffs of the deck, which we should be getting a massive number of if we time things correctly.

Dragonback Assault not only plays as a minor board sweep in dealing with a number of smaller creatures, but if we play a land then we get a 4/4 Dragon token with flying, and if we reanimate a bunch of lands then we should get a veritable swarm of Dragons.

Then once we have a bunch of lands in play, ideally untapped because of cards like Spelunking or Amulet of Vigor if you happen to have it, then we can also make use of all the mana that it generates using Worldsoul’s Rage, which not only can take out a player, but can also get any potential lands from our hand and/or graveyard back into play for us to use.

If we want to make sure that we have a clear way to attack we can use Retreat to Coralhelm to tap a creature an opponent controls or untap one of our creatures, Valakut Exploration can help us get some more cards we can play into exile and if we don’t those cards go to the graveyard and each opponent is dealt damage equal to the number of cards sent to the graveyard this way, and Primeval Bounty as a way to gain a ton of life for each land that enters as well as bonuses to playing creature or noncreature spells.

Boborygmos and Fblthp are a lands matter Commander that has a different play pattern than many other lands Commander. They want us to get lands into the graveyard for a decent effect in dealing damage to a creature, but what they lack in direct power they make for as an engine for a land reanimation deck.

Graveyard decks are always subject to being interacted with, but with the higher land count we should be running, we should be able to make due even if our graveyard is exiled a couple of times. The duo also have a unique way of protection in being able to go to our deck, which helps keep our Commander Tax low and have us still be able to play mana efficiently.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
