Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be talking about Bonny Pall, Clearcutter!

Bonny Pall is a six mana 6/5 with reach and when she enters the battlefield you create Beau, a legendary blue Ox creature token whose power and toughness is based on the number of lands that you have and whenever you attack you draw card and may put a land from your hand or graveyard onto the battlefield.

Bonny Pall is an interesting take on having a Landfall Commander in that she fuels the token she makes rather than herself, which means that even if she is removed from the battlefield and the token isn’t, you still have a threat in play. Hell, she even has surprise reach which can be relevant in certain match ups and the fact that the lands come in untapped are also a tremendous value.

So the game plan is to get a bunch of lands into play to make a big Beau that can swing in for massive damage, while also taking advantage of some Landfall payoffs.

The first thing we should take a look at are some ways we can take advantage of Bonny Pall’s ability to take lands from our hand or the graveyard.

The cycle of lands that came from Streets of New Capenna, Brokers Hideout being the example, can fetch one of the three basic lands of the gang and put into play tapped and gain us a life. Since each of these can search one of the basics for our deck, we can include them to have a consistent land to bring back and gain a bit of life.

In a similar vein Blighted Woodland and Blighted Cataract are lands that can sacrifice themselves for value, with Blighted Woodland getting you two basic lands and Blighted Cataract drawing you two cards. We can’t get the rest of the cycle from Battle for Zendikar, but the ones we can get we can recur with fairly decent results.

We also have access to the Panorama cycle which also tap for mana and can fetch a basic, Fabled Passage top fetch an untapped basic once we hit four or more lands, Terramorphic Expanse and Evolving Wilds to also get basics, and if we want to be mean then cards like Field of Ruin and Demolition Field to destroy opponents nonbasic lands to fetch basics, or Ghost Quarter and Strip Mine to have repeatable land hate.

Of course there are also the Fetchlands, of which you can include most of them to fetch lands that have a land type, but the previous options are also very effective in repeatable land tutors since the lands come in untapped.

The next thing that we need to look for are the plethora of Landfall triggers to take the most advantage of all the lands coming into play.

Twists and Turns is an interesting card because it synergizes with the explore mechanic, which can also get us lands into our hand, by allowing us to scry and has a creature explore when it enters. Then once we hit seven lands, easy enough with the deck, it transforms into Mycoid Maze, which allows us to look at the top four cards of our library to dig for more creatures to put in our hand.

We also have access to the usual suspects of Landfall decks like Tireless Provisioner, Scute Swarm, Primeval Bounty, and Lotus Cobra as ways to generate either mana, creatures, or more life for us to pull us into a further position ahead of our opponents.

With how often we are getting lands into play then there are also cards like Ior Ruin Expedition to gain quest counters quickly to have a cheap way to draw two cards or Khalni Heart Expedition to get even more Landfall triggers since it gets two basics from our deck.

If you want a different avenue to play with Landfall decks then you can use Architect of the Untamed and Roil Cartographer to get Energy counters involved to either make a sizable 6/6 token or to draw three cards respectively.

Now that we have a ton of lands in play, we should make use of all of the mana that we have access to.

Gridlock is a way that we can make use of the mana by tapping down a truckload of creatures an opponent controls in order to get an attack through for our massive Beau. Icy Blast also does this, but has a Ferocious addition in that it prevents the tapped creatures from untapping during that players next untap phase if we control a creature with power 4 or greater, which with Bonny Pall we fulfill by default.

If we want to make our creatures even bigger then we can cast Broodlord, which enters with X +1/+1 counters and distributes X +1/+1 counters when it enters to any number of targets, which if we have a massive number of lands then we can distribute a massive number of counters as well.

There is also a way to generate an absurd amount of Landfall triggers by using Doppelgang, which makes X copies of X number of targets, and even though it costs XXX a blue and green, this means that if we have eleven lands in play we can make three copies of three different lands to get nine Landfall triggers, and we should be able to get to even higher numbers if we get more lands in play.

Bonny Pall is a value Commander in that she can continuously generate value by drawing you cards and getting additional land drops whenever you attack. This is a pet deck that I play Brawl with on Arena, so I know that the flaws are that getting Bonny Pall and Beau to stick can be an issue, especially if you are playing against a heavy control deck or a low to the ground aggro deck that you can’t hold off until you get Bonny Pall in play.

She is still a fun Commander to play with and can get out of hand much more easily than you would think.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
