Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be talking about Torens, Fist of the Angels!

Torens is a three mana 2/2 with training and whenever you cast a creature spell you create a 1/1 green and white Human Soldier creature token with training.

Such a simple effect and game plan; cast a ton of creature spells to get a bunch of creature tokens that get bigger over time. The difficulty comes with making sure that we can consistently trigger training, since in order for the creature to grow we need to attack with a creature with a higher power.

So the goal of the deck is to cast a ton of creature spells, have a few decently sized creatures to trigger training, take advantage of some Human typal synergies, and swing wide with some decent sized bodies.

The first thing we need are a bunch of cheap creatures so we can cast them as soon as we can to trigger Torens.

Champion of the Parish is perfect for this, especially if we have them on the battlefield early on. The Champion gets bigger whenever another Human enters the battlefield, and whenever we cast a creature spell we make a Human token with Torens, so the Champion can get massive very quickly, especially if we cast more Human spells.

If we include Champion of the Parish to the deck then Adeline, Resplendent Cathar is also a perfect include because not only is she a Human, but she makes Humans equal to the number of your opponents whenever you attack, making Champion of the Parish huge. Not only that, but she can be a consistently growing body to trigger training because she gets bigger for each creature you control, and you ideally will be making a ton of tokens.

Coppercoat Vanguard can make your Humans bigger while also giving them ward 1, Conclave Mentor can be a creature that can add an additional counter to your creatures whenever training triggers, Juniper Order Ranger adds a counter to creatures when they enter the battlefield while also adding one to themselves, and Luminarch Aspirant adds a counter to a creature you control at the beginning of each of your combats.

The next thing we need to consider is ways to maintain parity, especially since go wide boards are susceptible to board wipes.

Laid to Rest is perfect for this sort of deck because if a majority of our creatures are going to be Humans then we can draw a ton of cards, and since most of our creatures should have counters on them we can gain a ton of life to keep stable for any attacks made our way.

There is also Toski, Bearer of Secrets, which is an indestructible creature that must always attack but draws us a card whenever a creature we control deals combat damage to a player, which is what we should be doing at a fairly decent rate.

If we have the feeling a board wipe is coming our way, then we can play something like Camaraderie to draw a bunch of cards and gain a bunch of life while making our creatures a little stronger for a combat.

Wedding Announcement is also a good card to have because we can decide if we need a creature token more or card draw, and as the game goes on it then becomes an anthem to help make our creatures stronger.

We can also play around with timing using Unbreakable Formation, guaranteeing that our creatures have indestructible at instant speed to protect from a board wipe, but if we play it on our main phase then we can put a +1/+1 counter on all of our creatures and give them vigilance to keep our shield up against an aggressive deck.

We are going to be playing aggressively, so our win condition is making sure our creatures have enough power to accomplish it.

Virtue of Loyalty is great because we have the option of getting a body on the field while eventually becoming a consistent way to untap our creatures and grow them at the beginning of our end step, making sure we are always protected.

Bess, Soul Nourisher is an interesting card in that she gets bigger whenever a creature with base power and toughness 1/1 enters the battlefield and whenever she attacks she gives each creature with base power and toughness 1/1 +X/+X where X is the number of +1/+1 counters on her, meaning that the tokens that Torens makes will get massive.

You pair that with a trample enabler like Garruk’s Uprising or even an Overrun can make sure that those tokens have the opportunity to become lethal. If you want a creature way to get damage through then there is Sandstorm Salvager, which makes a creature token but for two mana and tap it then you put a +1/+1 counter on each creature token you control and they gain trample until the end of turn.

As for a way to give a very strong chance for victory then Sigarda’s Summons is the way to go because it gives all creatures you control with +1/+1 counters on them base power and toughness 4/4, gives them flying, and makes them Angels as well, which makes them harder to block in many instances.

Torens can be a fairly straightforward value Commander in that you play a ton of creatures to make a bunch of tokens, but the way to make sure you win is to have enough support pieces to help make sure that your tokens can have enough power to fulfill your game plan.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
