Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be talking about Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm!

Miirym is a six mana 6/6 with flying, ward 2, and whenever another nontoken Dragon enters the battlefield under your control, you create a token copy of it except that token isn’t legendary if that Dragon is legendary.

Just one look at that ability and it becomes clear why this is the tenth most popular Commander on EDHREC, and it is the second most popular Dragon Commander behind The Ur-Dragon and before Tiamat.

What shocks me is that it is still significantly cheaper than the other two Dragon options. In any case, the plan is get a ton of Dragons in play, and with Miirym in play get even more Dragons.

As with any big creature typal, we need ways to make it easier to cast our Dragons as well as support them.

Dragonspeaker Shaman is great in that it makes our Dragons 2 mana cheaper, and Dragonlord’s Servant makes Dragons an additional mana cheaper. Acolyte of Bahamut gives our Commander the ability that the first Dragon spell each turn we cast costs 2 mana less.

In the same vein, the various Orbs of Dragonkind are mana rocks that benefit Dragons, with the original Orb of Dragonkind being able to turn one mana into two of any color to cast Dragons or activate Dragon abilities or sacrifice it to add a Dragon from the top seven cards of our library to our hand.

The Carnelian Orb gives the Dragon cast with it haste, the Jade Orb gives the Dragon cast with it a +1/+1 counter and hexproof until end of turn, and the Lapis Orb to scry 2 when we cast a Dragon.

While Minion of the Mighty doesn’t ramp us necessarily, it does put a Dragon from our hand to the battlefield whenever we attack with it and creatures with a combined power of six or greater.

The next thing we need to look at are the actual Dragons we are going to use in order to set ourselves into a dominant position.

Atarka, World Render is perfect for this because giving our Dragons double strike whenever they attack is definitely going to be a threat, especially if there are two of them because of Miirym.

Thunderbreak Regent is also a good pick because it gives all of our Dragons some form of protection by having our opponents take 3 damage whenever they are targeted for a spell, 6 damage if we have two of these out.

Lozhan, Dragons’ Legacy to deal damage to any non-Commander target equal to the mana value of Dragons we cast, Thrakkus the Butcher double the power of Dragons we control when it attacks, and Utvara Hellkite to make 6/6 Dragons with flying whenever a Dragon we control attacks.

While having a ton of high powered Dragons can be difficult to deal with, we should always prepare for a grand win condition.

Sarkhan Unbroken can draw us cards while adding a mana, make a 4/4 Dragon, but most importantly ultimate into allowing us to put all of our Dragons onto the battlefield. When combined with an effect like Scourge of Valkas, which when it or another Dragon enters under our control it deals X damage to any target where X is the number of Dragons we control.

If we control Miirym, then the number of Dragons effectively doubles and since we get a trigger for each Dragon entering, we can potentially win the game. We can turn that to an almost guaranteed win if we have access to Roaming Throne, which would trigger each Scourge of Valkas again since each damage trigger is a separate instance of a triggered ability.

Dragon Tempest is another way to deal damage if we don’t have access to Roaming Throne, since it not only gives our creatures with flying haste, but if a Dragon enters then we essentially get an additional copy of Scourge of Valkas.

Miirym is a value Commander in the most definite sense of the term, meaning that you get a ton value when you play into Miirym’s game plan. It can lead to repetitive games, but you can switch out which Dragons you want to play in order to add some variety.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
