Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be talking about Tomik, Wielder of Law!

Tomik is a three mana 2/4 with affinity for Planeswalkers (cute reference), flying, vigilance, and whenever an opponent attacks with creatures, if two or more of those creatures are attacking you and/or Planeswalkers you control, that opponent loses 3 life and you draw a card.

This is an interesting Commander in that it wants your opponents to attack you to drain them and draw a card, but also discourages your opponents from attacking you with more than one creature.

There is also the fact that the cute reference of Tomik having affinity for Planeswalkers also allows us to explore a Super Friends strategy, which can help alleviate an opponents attacking us in some capacity, but this is still a tricky card to build around.

The first thing we need to do is find ways to force our opponents to attack, and most importantly they need to attack us.

Gideon Jura is perfect for us, one because his plus ability forces an opponent to attack him during their next turn, and is also a Planeswalker to allow for affinity.

There are few options to force attacks onto us that aren’t goad, but there are still a couple options we can consider like Imp’s Taunt which forces an opponent’s creature to attack while also having a Buyback cost so we can potentially repeat it.

Maddening Imp forces all creatures an opponent controls to attack destroying the ones that didn’t at the beginning of the next end step. This forces a choice on your opponent to not use their creatures activated abilities and attack at the risk of having any valuable creatures die.

Similarly Nettling Imp and Norritt forces a single creature to attack or be destroyed, while Oracle-en-Vec has your opponents choose which of their creatures attack and the ones that didn’t get destroyed.

Since we are going to be playing some Planeswalkers, we need cards that synergize with Planeswalkers.

Oath of Kaya is great because not only does it deal 3 damage and gain us 3 life, but whenever an opponent attacks a Planeswalker we control, it drains them for 2. We are trying to incentivize some attacks on us, but we still need to find ways to protect our win conditions in our Planeswalkers.

Speaking of oaths, Oath of Gideon is great because it makes us two 1/1 Kor Ally creature tokens and gives our Planeswalkers an additional loyalty counter when they enter the battlefield.

Proud-Pack Rhino can put a shield counter on something or proliferate when it enters, Metastatic Evangel proliferates whenever a nontoken creature enters under our control, and Semester’s End can blink all of our creatures and Planeswalkers giving them either a +1/+1 counter or an additional loyalty counter when they come back at the beginning of the end step.

There is also Command the Dreadhorde, which allows us to reanimate creatures and Planeswalkers from our graveyard at the cost of life equal to the total mana value of what we are reanimating.

As with most Super Friends strategies, the game is going to be a grindy battle of attrition where we try to get as many Planeswalkers in play to help us get a win.

The Wanderer is an example of simple versatility because it prevents and burn damage from hitting us or permanents we control if our opponents try to get clever, while also having a way to exile a large threat.

Sorin, Solemn Visitor is great for the long game because not only does he give creatures we control a buff and lifelink, but if we manage to ultimate then it forces our opponents to sacrifice a creature at the beginning of their upkeep.

There is also Gideon, Champion of Justice, which can give himself a bunch of loyalty counters if an opponent has a bunch of creatures, become a massive threat equal to the number of loyalty he has, and has an ultimate that can effectively reset the game, unless we also play something like Perch Protection while gifting an extra turn to an opponent.

Tomik is an interesting Commander in that in order to get the full benefit you need your opponents to attack you a bit, which is why I opted not to have effects that tax your opponents from attacking you or limiting the number of attacking creatures.

You can go full Pillow Fort, but then Tomik’s second ability may never see use, and if I buy a card I want to use as much of the card as possible. If only Tomik had access to red and blue to be fully in flavor.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
