Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be talking about Syr Ginger, the Meal Ender!

Syr Ginger is a two mana 3/1 that gains trample, hexproof, and haste as long as an opponent controls a planeswalker and whenever another artifact you control is put into the graveyard from the battlefield you put a +1/+1 counter on Syr Ginger and scry 1, and for 2 mana and tap you can sacrifice Syr Ginger to gain life equal to their power.

Having a Commander that focuses on sacrificing artifacts isn’t unusual, it is interesting to see one that is colorless.

There are plenty of colorless cards that we have access to in order to have Syr Ginger gain a ton of +1/+1 counters, so our strategy will end up becoming more of a Voltron styled strategy.

First we need a large number of low mana artifacts that can sacrifice themselves for some form of value.

One of the best ways to get value from a low mana artifact that can sacrifice itself is Mishra’s Bauble, which lets us peek at the top of any player’s library and draw an additional card.

Other solid picks for zero mana artifacts that can sacrifice themselves are Tormod’s Crypt which we can use in order to get rid of any graveyard shenanigans, Lodestone Bauble to recycle any basic lands to the top of our library and draw an extra card, and Urza’s Bauble to peek at an opponents hand and draw a card.

There are also a ton of one or two mana artifacts that we can use like Candy Trail to gain life and draw a card, Lembas for a recursive way to draw a card, scry and gain life, or Scrap Compactor to deal damage or destroy a creature or Vehicle.

While it doesn’t sacrifice itself, Collector’s Vault can help us by drawing a card, discarding a card and more importantly make Treasures, which will be important for Syr Ginger in getting bigger.

Another thing we need are creatures and additional ways to sacrifice artifacts, just as a backup way to get artifacts into the graveyard.

Arcbound Ravager is one of the better ways to this because it acts as a free sacrifice outlet, so if we have any incidental artifact tokens we can make Arcbound Ravager bigger and put its counters onto Syr Ginger since we can sacrifice itself to its own ability.

Extruder can sacrifice an artifact to put a +1/+1 counter on to another creature, Piston Sledge to auto equip to a creature and sacrifice an artifact to equip, and Threefold Thunderhulk to make some Gnome artifact tokens that we can sacrifice to make it bigger to make even more tokens.

Jhoira’s Familiar is a creature we can use to make our artifacts cheaper, Forsaken Monument to be an anthem, ramp and gain life when we cast colorless spells, and Patchwork Automaton which gets bigger whenever we cast an artifact spell.

We also have Transmutation Font, which makes a Blood, Clue, or Food token and we can also use to sacrifice three artifacts to tutor an artifact into play.

Now we need to look at additional ways to get counters and other keywords onto Syr Ginger.

Tarrian’s Soulcleaver is one of the better ways to get this done since not only does it give vigilance, but whenever any creature or artifact goes to the graveyard, you put a +1/+1 counter onto the equipped creature.

There is also the old reliable cards in Swiftfoot Boots or Lightning Greaves, which give haste and some form of protection in either hexproof or shroud. Leyline Axe is a solid equipment choice as well because not only does it get onto the battlefield for free if it’s in our starting hand, but also gives double strike and trample.

If you have access to some of the more expensive Equipment or artifacts like Commander’s Plate, any of the Swords, Mithril Coat, or Darksteel Forge then I highly encourage that you play them.

Syr Ginger is an interesting Voltron Commander, even if they are straightforward to build. Colorless Commanders are an interesting way to build decks because of the drastically limited options, so we may be hampered in some aspects, it does streamline deckbuilding.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
