Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be talking about Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder!

Yidris is a four mana 5/4 with trample and whenever Yidris deals combat damage to a player, as you cast spells from your hand this turn they gain cascade.

Cascade is a fun mechanic that brings about a ton of random games, which means that we get to have another look at a Chaos deck! I do love a good Chaos deck, and we also get the benefit of getting more colors to work with.

First thing we need to do is find as many ways to enable the cascade shenanigans and then get a ton of spells off of those cascade triggers.

The first part of getting a ton of cascade spells is not the hardest thing to do, especially since we have access to more colors.

Shardless Agent is a 3 mana cascade spell, which is one of the cheaper ways to get a cascade spells into play. There is also Violent Outburst and Demonic Dread to be cheap ways to cascade.

We also have ways to give cards cascade, Bigger on the Inside being one those ways to not only fix our mana, but to also give the next spell we cast cascade. Wild-Magic Sorcerer is a card that gives the first spell you cast from exile cascade, which means if you cast a spell from cascade, you get to cascade again.

Another way we can ramp is via Averna, the Chaos Bloom, which as we cascade we can put a land from the exiled cards onto the battlefield tapped.

If we want some huge cascade enablers then there is Maelstrom Wanderer and Apex Devastator which have multiple instances of cascade, which will then be added to the cascade fountain.

Now we need to look at the spells that we are planning to cascade into, many of which will either be 0 mana spells or no mana spells.

Profane Tutor is an excellent choice because it turns a random cascade into a free tutor for any card in our library.

Crashing Footfalls becomes free bodies, Lotus Bloom and Mox Tantalite and Sol Talisman become free ramp for our bigger cascade spells, Gaea’s Will to cast spells and play lands from our graveyard, Inevitable Betrayal to steal our opponents things, Ancestral Visions to draw three cards, the list is pretty solid.

We even have the various Pacts to cast for free, provided we have access to the mana to make sure we don’t die next turn.

Since we are going to ideally be casting a ton of spells, then we should take a look at spells with Storm to make the most out of us casting a ton of spells.

Temporal Fissure is great for clearing the board in order for Yidris to deal the necessary combat damage. There is also Tendrils of Agony, which we can use to drain an opponent the more spells we cast.

Weather the Storm is also a helpful way for us to stabilize if we end up in an unfavorable position, Empty the Warrens and Chatterstorm for a huge board, Grapeshot for damage, Flusterstorm to counter a ton of spells, and Haze of Rage to get a ton of damage through.

The helpful thing about all of these options is that they are relatively cheap mana wise, meaning that we don’t lose too much value if we cascade into them, save for Flusterstorm but that’s the flaw of any cascade deck.

Yidris can bring about a lot of random play, which is fine for some groups and less fine in others. You can build a much more straightforward cascade build around Yidris, but if you want full on cascade shenanigans where you don’t know where you’ll end up, then Yidris may be up your alley.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
