Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to talk about Narset, Enlightened Exile!

Narset is a four mana 3/4 that gives creatures you control prowess and whenever she attacks, exile a noncreature, nonland card with mana value less than Narset’s power from a graveyard and copy it, casting the copy without paying its mana cost.

Spellslinger aggro is an interesting combination that allows you to cast a ton of spells at once, with one of the ways to win being an aggro beatdown with all your creatures now having prowess.

So the goal of this deck is to cast a bunch of spells or get some cards into our graveyard, attack to cast even more spells, and go aggro with a decent board of creatures.

The first thing we need to do is get a decent number of creatures onto the battlefield that we can use to take advantage of all of them having prowess.

Since we are going for a spellslinger strategy, creatures like Young Pyromancer are worth looking at because with us casting a bunch of instants and sorceries, we should be able to develop a wide enough board to make use of it.

Similarly, cards like Monastery Mentor and Third Path Iconoclast are creatures that make more creatures whenever you cast any noncreature spell, plus Monastery Mentor and the tokens they make also have prowess.

In fact more creatures that have prowess are also cards to consider, if you don’t mind tracking a bunch of prowess triggers. Monastery Swiftspear and Stormcatch Mentor are solid picks for being cheap prowess creatures with haste, with the latter making your instants and sorceries cheaper.

There is also Khenra Spellspear that has trample and prowess, which transforms into Gitaxian Spellstalker that has trample, ward 2, and double prowess, which when Narset is in play, that becomes triple prowess for even bigger damage.

Now we need to look at how we can get the most out of Narset’s ability by getting cards that can help us cast more spells.

Frantic Search is great in this regard because not only do you draw two cards and discard two, but you also get to untap up to three lands.

We need ways to get cards into our hand and graveyard so we can make the most our of them, so Fact or Fiction works really well in this case because it forces an opponent to consider what we can use now versus what we can use in the combat step.

In a similar vein, Prismari Command can help us draw cards and discard cards, but can deal damage, make a Treasure, or destroy an artifact as we need it.

Note the mana value of the cards we’re casting, ranging in the four or lower mana value. This is because while we can wish up and down for us to be able to cast spells of mana value seven or higher, that is less likely to happen so we need cards we can realistically cast and still get a huge benefit from.

Keep in mind that Narset’s ability states that you can cast the copy of a noncreature, nonland card, which isn’t exclusively instants and sorceries.

Teferi, Time Raveler is a control piece that can make sure you can cast your spells uninterrupted and quicker, as well as bounce a problematic card and draw a card to boot.

There are also the other Planeswalker Narsets to consider, Parter of Veils to control your opponents draws, Transcendent to give your spells rebound, and Ancient Way giving you extra mana and potentially having your spells deal additional burn damage.

Jeskai Ascendency for ways to get your creatures even bigger, drawing and discarding cards whenever you cast a noncreature spell, Invasion of Gobakhan for hand disruption, and if you manage to get Narset’s power high enough. you could even potentially cast an Embercleave to attach to your Narset to deal a ton of damage.

That is a bit of pie in the sky and will probably be the highest mana value of spell we have, but it is an option to think about if you want to lean more into the aggro plan.

Narset is a straightforward Commander in terms of what you would want to so, but with a lot of wiggle room in how you decide to build her. She can definitely be used for a Storm type of deck, as well as a pure control build, a burn deck, go wide aggro, and many more.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
