Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!
Today we are talking about Jedit Ojanen of Efrava!

Jedit Ojanen is a six mana 5/5 with forestwalk and whenever he attacks or blocks, you create a 2/2 Cat Warrior creature token with forestwalk.
Landwalk is not an ability you see often, and while building around the forestwalk will play a factor in building the deck, we are going to be using the fact that Jedit Ojanen has three green pips in his casting cost.
Mono Green Devotion is a staple archetype in Pioneer, so bringing it out in Commander should be interesting, especially with the wider card pool.

The first important thing we need is ways to increase our devotion count, and there are plenty of cards we can use to do so.
Hidden Path has four green pips and it gives all green creatures forestwalk, which is a risky play, but that means we can expand our card pool to include other creatures that don’t have forestwalk.
If we don’t mind losing some life, the Defilor of Vigor is an option to allow us to cast our more green pip heavy spells cheaply, adding devotion, while also growing our creature whenever we cast a green spell.
There is also Tribute to the World Tree, which draws us cards when we play our bigger creatures, but also makes the tokens from Jedit Ojanen into 4/4’s that can potentially be unblockable.
With that, Gaea’s Anthem and Unnatural Growth become much more lethal in making our creatures into even bigger threats. We also have access to protection with cards like Lion Umbra and Bear Umbra, which not only protects Jedit Ojanen, but also increases his power.

Like I said earlier, forestwalk will not be the main focus of the deck, but it does allow us to get some form of evasion and getting damage through, so it is an aspect to take a look at.
Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth makes all lands into Forests, and has thankfully lowered in price over the years, making it within the range of being an affordable include for more budget decks.
If it is still out of the range for some people, then there still the slower but still effective options in Gaea’s Liege, which taps to turn a land into a Forest, and Thelonite Monk, which turns a land into a Forest after sacrificing a green creature.
Since we are putting effort into having a lot of Forests, then Forest synergies like Ashaya, Soul of the Wild combined with Beacon of Creation will serve us well to solidify our board presence.

Now that we have ways to get a lot of devotion and making our creatures able to have a form of evasion, now we need the actual payoffs from devotion.
Cards like Klothys’s Design are what we are looking for, and if we have a ton of devotion then our creatures get massive and if our plan in giving our creatures forestwalk and giving our opponents Forests, then we don’t need trample to get damage through.
If we still want trample, then we have Nylea, God of the Hunt which gives our creatures trample, can increase the power of our creatures by +2/+2 for four mana, and is an indestructible creature when our devotion to green becomes 5, which should happen quickly.
While Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is the best land for a devotion deck, it can definitely be out of people’s budget, so something like Nyx Lotus and Karametra’s Acolyte can serve as adequate substitutes.
Renata, Called to the Hunt gives creatures a +1/+1 counter when they enter the battlefield and has power equal to our devotion to green, Setessan Petitioner and Nylea’s Disciple can help us gain life if we get too greedy with Defiler of Vigor, and Aspect of Hydra can give a one time boost equal to our devotion if we need it.
There are also cards that care about green in general that we can use, like Khalni Hydra which gets a green mana cheaper for each green creature we control and itself has eight green pips, Primalcrux which has Chroma for green to equal it’s power and toughness, and Bellowing Tanglewurm to give our green creatures Intimidate as well.
Jedit Ojanen can enable a go wide aggro deck that can swing big, especially if we are able to give our creatures evasion and get our devotion payoffs online.
Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!
Peace,
From, J.M. Casual
