Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!
Today we are going to be talking about Stangg!

Stangg is a six mana 3/4 that creates a Stangg Twin legendary token where if either one of them leaves the battlefield, the other one leaves as well.
This is an interesting effect to have come out from this era, and playing around with it is a bit difficult in these colors, but there are ways that we can make this work, especially since making an additional creature can be used to our advantage.
The idea is to take make use of the fact that we make two bodies, so we need to use effects that gain a benefit from having creatures entering the battlefield.

Ideally we are going to be working towards a token deck that takes advantage of having benefits whenever a creature enters the battlefield, rather than a go wide aggro deck, but we have that as a backup plan if we need it.
Sylvan Anthem is ideal in making sure that we can draw what we need, while also providing the anthem effect. A lot of the creatures we are going to be playing will be green mana dorks that will help us ramp out Stangg.
We are also going to be playing cheap creatures that gain benefits from creatures entering the battlefield like Llanowar Stalker and Devilish Valet, which both get triggers for when a creature enters the battlefield.
There is also Tribute to the World Tree, which boosts any creature with power 3 or less we control by giving them counters or when Stangg and Stangg Twin enter draws you two cards because their power is 3.

Evolve is an ability to consider using to your advantage, mostly because when Stangg enters the battlefield, you could potentially get two triggers off of it because of the both of the Stangg’s off kilter power and toughness.
Dinosaur Egg has the potential to get something big when it dies because even just one casting of Stangg we can get Dinosaur Egg’s toughness to 5, which can be impactful when it dies.
We have access to Gyre Sage for ramp, Experiment One for a consistent body, and Renegade Krasis for boosting our creatures with counters on them.
If we want an insanely massive board, then we could play Watchful Radstag, which creates a token copy of itself whenever its Evolve ability resolves, which after we cast Stangg, we will have four Watchful Radstag’s on the battlefield.
In red and green there aren’t any reliable ways to blink or flicker Stangg so we have a massive Watchful Radstag stampede, but there are still colorless options in Conjurer’s Closet, Golden Argosy, and Voyager Staff.

Now we need to find benefits for having a wide enough board for us to close out a game.
Enduring Courage is a way for us to go through with an aggro plan, turning our two 3/4’s into two 5/4’s with haste. What helps is that Enduring Courage can return to the battlefield if it dies, so our opponents will either need to spend two removal spells to get rid of it or an exile based removal to do so.
Impact Tremors and Agate Instigator also help in damaging our opponents whenever a creature enters the battlefield for us, and even more so if we can get Agate Instigator’s Offspring ability for an additional ping.
Terror of the Peaks is a great way to get huge damage off, and when Stangg and Stangg Twin enter the battlefield, we essentially have two Lightning Bolts that we can use.
If we want bigger Stangg’s, then there is Railway Brawler that we can Plot so that when we are ready to cast Stangg we can cast Railway Brawler first so that the twins double their power.
Stangg as a Commander is interesting, especially for how old it is. While token making wasn’t a new concept in Magic at the time, having a creature make essentially a copy of itself was a new concept. Even the mana value isn’t as bad of a trade off because you essentially get a 6/8 split into two creatures.
One of the better early Commanders in my opinion.
Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow on the next Daily Commander!
Peace,
