Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be talking about Vega, the Watcher!

Vega is a three mana 2/2 with flying that whenever you cast a spell from anywhere other than your hand, you draw a card.

A simple effect that doesn’t leave a lot to work with, but what is does present is an interesting deck building challenge: how can we cast things not from our hand.

White and blue have some graveyard interaction, but not to the level that is often presented in black or green, but there are other ways in which we can cast not from our hand.

The most obvious ways are with effects like Foretell, which came from Kaldheim where Vega is from, but we also have other effects that cast from exile such as Suspend and Plot.

Dust Animus is something we can get value later on as a creature we can cast that is huge with flying and lifelink when we have five untapped lands.

We are most likely going to go in the control direction, so Foretell cards like Saw It Coming can work as a counter spell and Doomskar works as removal we can set aside to keep from being taken away from any forced discard or wheel effects.

With Suspend also being an option, we have cards like Inevitable Betrayal to steal a creature from out opponents deck, Ancestral Vision to draw three cards, or even Atraxi Warden for a big creature that can exile another creature.

There are also plenty of ways to remove time counters from Suspended cards like Dust of Moments and Clockspinning.

Another way we can take advantage in not casting from our hand is to cast from the top of our library, of which there are a couple ways in which we can do so.

The Reality Chip allows us to look at the top of our library at any time and if it is attached to a creature, then we can play lands and cast spells from the top of our library.

Precognition Field allows us to cast instant and sorceries from the top of our library, Cemetery Illuminator allows us to cast a spell from the top of our library if it shares a type from an exiled card it gets from entering or attacking, and Assemble the Players lets us cast a creature with power 2 or less from the top once each turn.

We should look at Fortune Teller’s Talent, which is a Class Enchantment that when maxed out can make anything we cast from anywhere other than our hand 2 mana cheaper.

This sort of deck works best as a control type of deck, where we accrue as much value as we can with spells that we cast from places other than our hand.

Divine Reckoning is a solid enough board wipe that we can use early and later in the game to help maintain a steady field advantage.

If we have Jace Reawakened then we can Plot some of our smaller sorceries and creatures safe from some interaction, while we still have the mana to cast our counter spells and board wipes.

We also benefit from anything that has a benefit from a second draw, like Homunculus Horde, or anything that creates a token from us casting instants and sorceries like Talrand, Sky Summoner or anything with prowess.

Vega is an engine Commander, they don’t win the game on their own, but they can definitely aid us in getting into a position to win so long as we go along with the gimmick of casting as few things from our hand as possible.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow on the next Daily Commander!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
