Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be talking about Ognis, the Dragon’s Lash!

Ognis is a four mana 3/3 with haste and whenever a creature you control with haste attacks, you create a tapped Treasure token.

A simple and effective build around, especially since Ognis can be cast with only red mana if necessary, but having the flexibility and availability of black and green make this a much more interesting build.

Of course the goal is to basically only use haste creatures because we accrue the most value from it, but we should also keep in mind what to use for a finisher when the time comes for it.

First, the hasty creature suite.

While red is filled to the brim with cheap haste creatures, green and black have a number of more expensive creatures that have haste, and a lot of the times they have an additional ability that makes them better.

When Timbermare comes into play, it taps all other creatures, meaning that if you have a solid number of Treasures already then you can play Timbermare, tap all of your opponents things, then play a bunch of your other cheap creatures and swing in for a massive amount of damage.

There is also Questing Beast which a solid creature in general, Banehound is a cheap lifelink creature to get you ahead early, and of course Ball Lightning for a huge swing.

Now we need more benefits for constantly attacking.

We can take a look at anything that triggers on us attacking, especially since Ognis also triggers whenever our haste creatures attack.

Beastmaster Ascension is one of the better options because a lot of the cheap haste creatures that we play are going to be smaller, but if we had a way to get a huge benefit from attacking a lot with cheap haste creatures, then those weak haste creatures suddenly become major threats.

It becomes even more of a threat with extra combat spells, like Relentless Assault which untaps anything we control that attacked, gives us another combat and another main phase.

With these things combined, we can very quickly become an aggressive threat, and get a ton of Treasure tokens to make use of. If you are able to spend a bit of money or have access to it, Amulet of Vigor works wonders in this deck to make immediate use of your Treasure tokens.

Speaking of which, what do we use the Treasure tokens for?

The ideal way to win is to finish off whatever our creatures couldn’t and with all the mana that we generate, albeit tapped, we should have burn spells that we can use as mana sinks.

Fireball is the classic way to win, especially since its affordable and gets better the more mana we have as well as how few opponents we have. There is also Banefire, which when cast for X equals five or more it can’t be countered and the damage isn’t prevented either.

That is only for a single target, but if it’s your last opponent then does that really matter?

Ognis is a solid Commander with a solid build around plan, and while having the Treasures coming in tapped is not ideal, it is still a bunch of mana if we build correctly.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!

Peace,

From, J.M. Casual
