Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!
Today we are going to be talking about Akim, the Soaring Wind!

Akim is a five mana 3/4 with flying and whenever you make one or more tokens for the first time each turn, you make a 1/1 Bird creature token and for 6 mana you can give creature tokens you control double strike until the end of the turn.
One of my favorite decks to play are tokens decks, and I love having payoffs for having a massive number of tokens.
Akim’s token payoff is giving your creature tokens double strike, which means that the ideal way to build Akim is a critical mass of tokens going aggro, which sounds like a fine plan for me.

What we should focus on is making sure that the tokens we have on board are getting huge to make double strike even better, so we should be looking at things that gives the Bird tokens that Akim makes bigger.
While we will be playing other token makers, ones that make Birds will be better so we can synergize better with Akim.
Kangee, Aerie Keeper doesn’t make tokens but it makes our Birds, which includes Akim, bigger for each feather counter on it. So if we cast Kangee later in the game when we have a large quantity of Bird tokens, we can give them the Lord effect and the give them double strike for a potential win.
The best part about Akim’s ability is that it triggers whenever you make a token, and there are quite a few ways to make a token at instant speed.

While the rate tends to be pretty high for instants that make tokens for your, more often than not they tend to have some sort of benefit attached to them.
Dance with Devils only makes two 1/1’s but they also have a death effect, and remember with Akim out, this just means that this makes an additional Bird token.
Pair the instants that make tokens with a couple of counter spells then you have a way to keep your opponents guessing at what you are going to do at every turn, especially if you keep hold and allow deals to be made.
I don’t normally talk about the politicking aspect of Commander because that varies from game to game, play group to play group, but being in the three colors that can easily be a control type deck can often garner some favors for your opponents.
Speaking of control, that is going to be our primary win condition, if you don’t mind a little extra turn shenanigans.

Since we are going to be having a massive number of creature tokens, ideally, then we should be able to cast Complete the Circuit via Convoke and then cast Alrund’s Epiphany.
If successful, then that means we should take three extra turns while also making even more Bird tokens that we can use to win the game, should we have the suitable number of Birds for multiple alpha strikes.
Akim is a set up Commander that, when everything is in its place, can be used to win the game in a fairly definitive way. Being reliant on a number of creatures also means that this deck is susceptible to board wipes, but that can be avoided if you have a control back up plan to make sure that you can pull off what you’re trying to set up.
Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!
Peace,
