Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be talking about Feldon of the Third Path!

Feldon is a 3 mana 2/3 with an activated ability for two and a red and tap to create a token copy of creature from your graveyard that becomes an artifact in addition to its other types, gains haste, and is sacrificed at the beginning of the next end step.

Feldon is a character that is steeped in tragedy and intrigue, but we are more focused on getting as many creatures into our graveyard and exploiting big creatures.

Now first things first, how do we get things into the graveyard? Red is not necessarily the self mill color, but there is still the most iconic ways that red gains card advantage.

Red may not mill, but they sure can discard really well. Not only that, but they can also discard to draw more than they discarded (technically card neutral, but semantics).

Cathartic Reunion is only one example. There’s Big Score, which not only draws you two cards after discarding one, but also nets you two Treasure tokens, which can help you activate Feldon’s ability. Cathartic Pyre is a modal spell that either does three damage to a creature or planeswalker or discard two to draw two.

There is a plethora of discard and draw effects that red specializes in, and that’s not even bring up wheel effects into the conversation.

Now that we have ways to discard cards and keep at least some form of card parity, what do we bring out?

Some of the more ideal targets are big Dragons that have a huge mana cost to cast, and one that I would like to have would be Blast-Furnace Hellkite, and that is because of the flexibility it has.

The Hellkite has the ability to be cast as if it had flash if you sacrifice an artifact and pay the difference in mana cost. Since the creatures that Feldon copies become artifacts that get sacrificed at the end of the turn, you can get a really good Dragon onto the battlefield potentially for really cheap.

There are plenty of other big mana targets, mostly Dragons, that I have in mind but that’s really where someone can get creative and customize what they really want.

Of course this helps us build an aggro deck, and that is our win condition, but is there any way that we can get more benefits from Feldon?

While not every extra combat spell may work, we can definitely take advantage of the ones that give an opportunity to bring a big thing into play, even if it does risk Feldon dying for it to work.

Since we are going for a more aggressive strategy, it will definitely help close out the game and help bring another big thing onto the battlefield to ease us into a more comfortable position.

Now the biggest downside is that the creatures do get sacrificed at the end of the turn, which can leave you exposed, but that’s always the risk of aggressive decks.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow on the next Daily Commande!

  1. […] Daily Commander: Feldon of the Third Path @ J.M. Casual Blog – As someone enjoying some blue/green self-mill at the moment, the prospect of some red graveyard play seems fun. I love blog posts like this that teach me about cards that I had not encountered before. […]
