Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be talking about Geist of Saint Traft!

The Geist is a three mana 2/2 with Hexproof that whenever it attacks, you make a 4/4 Angel with flying that exiles itself after combat.

This is very straight forward, we should be looking to make a combat focused deck, but let’s add a bit of a twist to it.

It’s kind of boring to have just one Angel attack, why don’t we make it a secret Angel deck?

I mean there are many Angels in blue and white, mostly white, and we have had quite a few new Angels coming in the newer sets, so let’s take advantage of all the Angels.

Giada would make for a solid Angel Commander herself, but I think that she would be better served as a mana dork and to help make all the Angels that the Geist is making even bigger.

We can take a look at a few other Angel support pieces like Bishop of Wings, which will consistently gain us life when an Angel comes in, as well as making additional tokens when an Angel dies.

Resplendent Angel just got a reprint in Lost Caverns of Ixalan and it will make even more Angels for us to use for the all the life that we are gaining.

Now, what else can we do to help supplement the vast amount of Angels?

While Angels are big, we can always go bigger while making things worse for our opponents.

There are a plethora of cards that give benefits to fliers, and if we use those to our advantage, then we can make a massive army of huge Angels.

Not every deck has answers to fliers, so if we make a decent number of them then we should be good, and it becomes better if we run flier specific anthem and lord effects.

There is also a a counter spell that benefits you if you have a flier in Lofty Denial, which turns a counter spell unless your opponent can pay 1 into a counter spell unless your opponent can pay 4.

If you somehow are able to get one (or are fine with proxies), a Moat to prevent your opponents from attacking you would be amazing, but more than likely a Magus of the Moat is what is most available and the better choice in my opinion.

Now that we have a plan, how do we close out games?

Now unfortunately white and blue don’t have many Overrun sort of effects, but something like Moonshaker Cavalry does help close out the game.

We can use a decent chunk of anthems and lord effects to bring our creatures up in power, as well as some instants and sorceries that give +1/+1 counters on all of our creatures.

While the Geist is only here to really facilitate a method of getting more Angels, it does bring an interesting point into the conversation.

Sometimes a typal Commander isn’t part of that creature type, but rather something that can make that creature type a little more effective.

While there are other through lines that we can follow when building a Geist deck, there is always more than one way to make a deck, which is the fun part of this blog.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!

Peace,

From J.M. Casual
