Hello and welcome to Daily Commander!

Today we are going to be taking a look at Kruphix, God of Horizons!

A 5 mana 4/7 that gives you no maximum hand size, and any unused mana you have would remain, but become colorless instead.

To clarify for any new players, the way that this is worded means that the mana will float forever, even through your opponents turns, but at the caveat of being colorless.

This is a pretty strong effect, if a bit narrow, but it does make it so that you have a ton of mana always around when you need it, should Kruphix not be removed.

Despite being Indestructible, Kruphix is still susceptible to exile based removal and while Kruphix doesn’t count as a creature unless your devotion to green and blue is at least seven, we need ways to make sure we can use that mana effectively.

There are many cards in blue and green that can apply protection to your creatures, but that doesn’t always mean that Kruphix will always be a creature, so you have to make sure that you plan for that.

The other unfortunate aspect about that is the a lot of those can be pricier if you are on a budget, like Heroic Intervention, but if you can manage something like Guardian Augmenter which runs about five dollars, then you should be able to make things work.

Now that we have something like that in mind, how are we going to get so much mana?

Sure we have access to the usual green and blue ramp pieces, mana dorks and mana rocks, but the goal is to increase the volume of mana, so how do we make use of that?

After every set or two there almost always seems to be a green enchantment that allows you to fix your mana and add an extra mana, so we will be making use of those.

These are cheap and can help you get to a decent chunk of mana before you realize. Since we’re in blue, we also have access to some counterspells and with these types of enchantments we can have the correct colors that we need to cast the more pip intensive spells.

Speaking of, I haven’t mention a lot of blue while writing this, and that is because we want to make sure that the cards in blue helps us redeploy as necessary, and use that mana for X costs.

A lot of blue X cards either draw cards or counter, which are cards we definitely want to include as well as a lot of blue green cards that allow us to do even crazier things.

With something like Doppelgang as a way to sink all of that mana, we can use it for a few directions.

If we want to have a landfall package then we can make use of things like Scute Swarm to make an absurd number of tokens. If we are going big green aggro then we copy the big creatures. Copying enters effects, control enchantments or artifacts, opponent’s things, there are strategies aplenty.

Kruphix is a utility Commander, which means that provide the outlet while it is up to the player to decide where they want to with that strategy.

This is why it is so important to make sure that whatever strategy you decide to use, you need to make sure Kruphix is on the battlefield and protected.

Kruphix is five mana, and while the goal of the deck is to do an absurd amount of mana generation, if Kruphix gets removed every time they are deployed, then that mana goes to waste.

While that is the way that Commander rolls, mitigating the feeling of having done nothing is something we can try to avoid.

Thank you for reading, see you tomorrow for the next Daily Commander!

Peace,
