Hello everyone, J.M. Casual here and I can say that I am a fan of Magic: the Gathering. While I have not been playing the game for as long as other people, I can say that the game has it’s hooks pretty deep.
That being said though, of the many formats that the game has, Commander is not necessarily my favored format.
I enjoy Draft that I can play on the online client MTG Arena, Sealed when I go to a prerelease (when work doesn’t interfere), and Pioneer/Explorer being my favorite of the Constructed formats, Commander sits in a comfortable fourth place between these other formats.
Not that there is anything wrong with the format, I just don’t have the opportunity to play with it as often as I would like. I have tried playing it on the older online client MTG Online, but I have had some issue with that, namely people leaving in the middle of the game.
What I do love to do with the Commander format is brew, and boy do I have a lot of brews. While many of them have some self imposed limitations of them, mostly budget or my own poor deck building skills for earlier brews, I do enjoy trying to find neat synergies and builds with decks.
One problem.
I tend to gravitate to some of the same deck building traps. I have a preference for the type of deck I want to build, and while that isn’t an inherent issue, I want to expand on my horizons.
Then came one day at work when I was thinking what kind of blog to do, I realized that I could do a blog about various Commanders, what they do, some average strategies and some out there builds that could be done with them.
The question is how could I do it in a way that was unique enough compared to the hundreds if not thousands of other people out there?
Simple.
I let random chance take me where I want to go, and I do it everyday*.
There is the website called RandomCommander.com (not sponsored) that does what it says on the tin, and generates a random Commander for you.
The plan: Every day, write at least 500 words on that Commander and how I would personally build it as a Commander.
It is not the most original idea, but it is something that will help me become better as a deck builder…hopefully.
Now as you may have noticed the little * on everyday. Well if I did this everyday for the rest of my life, I would surely go insane. Which is why the plan is to this for at least a year and see where that takes me.
Other things to consider is that after messing with the website for a bit, there are times where Un-set cards, Universes Beyond, and Backgrounds for Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate will occasionally appear.
I’ve decided to roll with it when I do inevitably get either one of those options. Commander is a casual format where these cards should have a chance to be played. Plus it will be an even greater challenge for me personally to build decks for some of the more out there Un-set Commanders.
I will also blog about other things, most likely Magic related but could be about other stuff, in the interim, but that shouldn’t interrupt the Daily Commander blogs.
So come with me on this year long journey, and welcome to Daily Commander.
Peace,
From J.M. Casual
